The JMS Bride's Guide, Part 10: every shade of red we make

Red Bridal Lehenga Shades: Royal Red, Maroon, Rani Pink and Rust

"Red" is doing an enormous amount of work as a word. On our wedding-day shelf alone there are eighty-six pieces, and the difference between the reds in them is the difference between two completely different brides. Here is what we actually make, and who each one suits.

Royal red

The one people mean when they say red. Clean, saturated, slightly blue in its undertone, and the most photographed bridal colour in India for good reason: it holds under every kind of light, from midday mandap to a dim reception hall, and it does not go orange in a flash.

If you want your photographs to look unmistakably like an Indian wedding in twenty years, this is the safe choice, and safe is not an insult here.

Pure Kalidar, 36 kalis, elephant motif border. ₹28,400.

Maroon

Deeper, browner, quieter. Maroon reads as heritage rather than celebration, which is why it dominates the rajwadi and velvet shelves. It is also the kinder colour on camera if your venue lighting is warm and yellow, where a bright red can push towards orange.

Brides who describe wanting something "royal" rather than "bright" almost always mean maroon.

Dulhan, maroon raw silk. ₹14,960.

Rani pink

The genuinely under-rated one. Rani pink is fully traditional — it has been a bridal colour in the west of India for generations — but it photographs completely differently from red: lighter, more festive, more modern. It also suits a much wider range of skin tones than a deep maroon.

If red feels heavy to you but ivory feels too far, this is the answer, and most brides never consider it.

Sangria, rani pink raw silk, double dupatta. ₹19,600.

Cherry red and orange rust

Cherry sits warmer and brighter than royal red, with a slight pink lift. Orange rust goes the other way entirely, into terracotta territory. Rust has become a real trend for daytime and outdoor weddings, where the warmth works with the light instead of fighting it.

Both are more of a decision than royal red. That is the point of them.

Dulhan, orange rust raw silk. ₹22,800.

Chiku and gold

Not red at all, but it belongs in this conversation because it is where brides who want the rajwadi weight without the red end up. Chiku is a warm sandy brown that carries gold zari beautifully and photographs as expensive rather than as bright.

The thing nobody tells you about choosing red on a screen

Every screen renders red differently. The lehenga on your phone at night and the lehenga in a showroom under white light are not the same colour, and no amount of photography fixes that.

This is the single most common reason a bride is disappointed on delivery, and it is entirely avoidable: ask to see the actual piece on a video call before you pay. We do it free, and it takes about ten minutes. We also photograph your specific piece before it ships, so what you approve is what arrives.

How JMS Studio helps

We make across every one of these, from about ₹4,999 to the high ₹40,000s, in raw silk, velvet, tissue and net, so you are choosing a shade rather than accepting whichever red a showroom has in stock this month. Every piece can be stitched to your measurements by our own tailors in Surat.

See them side by side on the wedding-day shelf (86 pieces), or narrow it: rajwadi maroons, velvet, bridals under ₹20,000, the ₹25,000+ couture shelf. Going the other way instead? Pastels and ivories.

Frequently asked questions

Which shade of red is best for a bridal lehenga?

Royal red is the most reliable across every lighting condition. Maroon suits warm venue lighting and a heritage look. Rani pink is fully traditional but photographs lighter and more modern.

Is maroon or red better for wedding photographs?

In warm, yellow venue light maroon holds its colour better, while a bright red can push towards orange. In daylight or white light, royal red is unbeatable.

Is rani pink acceptable for a bride?

Completely. It has been a bridal colour in western India for generations. It simply reads lighter and more festive than deep red.

Can I see the real colour before I buy?

Yes, and you should. Screens render red inconsistently. Book a free WhatsApp video call to see the actual piece, and we photograph your specific lehenga before it ships.

What is a chiku lehenga?

A warm sandy-brown shade that carries gold zari particularly well. Brides choose it when they want rajwadi weight without red.
