The JMS Bride's Guide, Part 12: buying from Surat without coming to Surat

Buying a Bridal Lehenga from Surat Without Coming to Surat

Most of our brides never come to Surat. They buy a bridal lehenga, for the most photographed day of their life, from a screen in Ahmedabad or Toronto or Dubai. That should be frightening, and for a lot of brides it is. Here is exactly how it works, so it is not.

The video call, which is the part that matters

You can see any piece live on WhatsApp before you pay a rupee. It is free, it takes about ten minutes, and it is the single thing that removes most of the risk from buying online.

On the call you can ask us to hold the fabric to the light, turn the ghera so you can see the fall, show you the back of the embroidery, or put two similar reds next to each other. Screens render colour unreliably — especially reds — so this is not a formality, it is the fix for the most common cause of disappointment on delivery.

Royal red raw silk bridal lehenga with double dupatta photographed before dispatch

Every piece is photographed and checked before it leaves the workshop.

Measurements, without a tailor in the room

Every piece comes semi-stitched or as posted, and you can choose made-to-measure at checkout. That adds about seven days and a small tailoring charge, and our own master tailors cut it to your size.

You do not need to know how to measure yourself. A free video call is included to guide you through it, and there is a full walkthrough in Part 1 of this guide. For sizes 42 and above, or anything unusual, message us before ordering and we will confirm what we can do.

This matters more than brides expect. Across India, a local tailor alteration can undo months of planning in an afternoon. Having the piece cut to you by the people who made it is the safest version of this.

You see your actual lehenga before it ships

Not the catalogue photograph. Your piece, photographed after it is finished and checked, sent to you before dispatch. If something is not what you approved, that is the moment to say so — before it is on a plane.

How long it takes

Within India, orders usually arrive in about four to six days. International orders take around ten to twelve. Made-to-measure adds roughly seven days on top. Work backwards from your function date, not your wedding date, and leave room for the unexpected: if you are cutting it fine, tell us the date and we will tell you honestly whether it is possible.

Paying from outside India

Within India we take UPI, cards and net-banking. Shipping from outside India? Message us on WhatsApp and we will help you complete the payment securely.

We do not offer cash on delivery. What we offer instead is the video call, the pre-dispatch photographs, and a family name that has been on bridal wear since 1981 — which is a better guarantee than an unopened parcel at your door.

If something arrives wrong

In the unlikely event a piece arrives damaged, message us on WhatsApp with your order details and photographs and we will sort out an exchange. There is a real person on the other end of that conversation the whole way through.

How JMS Studio helps

The family opened its first shop in 1981 and the making has always happened in our own workshop in Surat. In 2020 we started selling direct to brides rather than only to showrooms. Everything above — the call, the measurements, the photographs before dispatch — exists because we know what it means to choose a wedding outfit from a screen, sometimes from another country.

Start browsing: wedding-day reds, bridals under ₹20,000, rajwadi, pastels, ivories, sangeet and cocktail, or the ₹25,000+ couture shelf.

Frequently asked questions

Can I see a lehenga before I buy it online?

Yes. Book a free WhatsApp video call and we will show you the actual piece live — the fabric in the light, the fall of the ghera, the back of the embroidery. We also photograph your specific piece before it ships.

How long does delivery take?

About four to six days within India and ten to twelve internationally. Made-to-measure adds roughly seven days.

Do you ship to NRI brides?

Yes. Many of our brides order from the US, UK, Canada, Australia and elsewhere, and the video call is how they check the piece first.

Do you offer cash on delivery?

No. Payments run through secure gateways, and the video call plus pre-dispatch photographs are how we make buying online safe instead.

What if the lehenga does not fit?

Choose made-to-measure at checkout and our own master tailors cut it to your measurements, with a free video call to guide you through taking them.

Ready when you are

Book the call first and browse afterwards. It is free, it takes ten minutes, and it answers more than any product page can.
